In this episode of Detail Therapy, Amy joins Natalie Sisson to talk about her new book, Suck It Up Princess, and how to unapologetically pursue your dreams.
(2:45) Why do you do what you do?
It’s so rewarding to have a job that energizes you every morning. Natalie explains that her mission of helping women each and every day is what gets her out of bed every morning. Natalie also shares how your mission and drive will change with you as you evolve and grow and how that will help build the business of your dreams.
Amy and Natalie share their bond over how they are advocates for practicality in going after your goals. Often times thought leaders give advice but don’t share the how to’s to get to where you want to be.
(10:25) Suck It Up Princess
Natalie explains how this practical, yet call-out phrase helped her get out of her personal funk and help her start taking positive actions to help herself out. The book is filled with personal memoirs and pep-talks for people wanting to set their lives on a positive path and go after the life they want.
(2:45) Be unapologetically yourself
When discussing Natalie’s book, Amy chimes in and expresses how the book helped her get a better sense of how to be authentically and unapologetically herself. The pair explains that you have to be in tune with everything that makes you who you are. It’s okay to embrace the highs and lows and the positives and negatives. When you know yourself on this deep emotional level you are able to better serve yourself and others to the best of your ability.
(15:32) Saying No
There is so much power in saying no and it doesn’t have to come from a place of malice. When you people please and say yes to things that don’t serve you, you are taking away time from important tasks that need to be taken care of. It can seem scary at first because you don’t want to disappoint you, but saying no can actually help the other person by allowing them to take responsibility. Saying no will also help show people that you have boundaries as a person and employee and that helps build respect between you and your community.
(21:35) Procrastination and how to get past it
Natalie explains how procrastination is the flip side of perfectionism. Often times people procrastinate projects because they don’t want to produce anything that isn’t absolutely perfect. Natalie explains that imperfect action to just start is a muscle we need to start exercising to take small steps towards our goals. Those baby steps are what get us to start making bigger steps and before you know it you’ve finished your goal. Take tiny action.
(25:30) Natalie’s morning routine and closing questions
Natalie explains that she starts her day with a morning meditation in bed before any one wakes up. After her meditation, she does a little yoga. Now that Natalie is an expecting mother, she has been doing some pregnancy pilates, but just even a little movement sets you up for the day.
When Amy asks Natalie what her element is and what motivates her, Natalie explains how talking with people and helping people start their own projects is what makes her feel like she’s in her element.
The duo also chats about the importance of organization in your life to live in a stress and clutter free environment. Amy also asks Natalie what her go to digital platform is as part of her morning. Like a true female entrepreneur, Natalie shares how she checks her calendar and her spreadsheet to check her three most important goals for the week.
Amy closes the segment by asking Natalie what it means to her to go after the life you want. Natalie explains that it means the world to her because when she is going after the life she wants, she is at her happiest.
